On September 19th, we hosted our annual appreciation event for the region’s building and design industry. During the event, which included a traditional New England clambake, we announced winners of the 7 Tide Builder and Developer Contest. After reviewing nearly three dozen entries, our panel of judges – all building and design professionals themselves – winnowed the submitted projects down to one winner in each category; Best Sub-Zero & Wolf Kitchen, Best Use of Marvin Windows, Best Kohler Bathroom, and Best Whole Home.

We’ve asked the winners to share their thoughts on their lives and careers, and their take on the industry.

First up is Bill Parquet of Affinity Builders, a residential construction management and general contractor located in Wellesley Hills, MA.

  1. What inspired you to become a builder?

My grandfather and father were builders. I guess it’s in the blood.

  1. What’s the key to fulfilling the vision of the architect and your client?

Listen to the architect, and follow the plans exactly as designed. And, always be prepared for when the plans change. You must be flexible.

  1. Words to live by?

Never give up!

  1. Do you have any advice for young people considering entering the building industry or the trades?

Join a great company and work yourself up from the bottom. Be patient. It’s the only way to learn everything you will need to know. Your goal is to one day become a trusted expert. It’s a 20-year journey.

  1. Currently coveting …

Time with family.

  1. How do you react to criticism?

I don’t. I have been in the business for a long time and understand that conflict is a sometimes-important part of the building process.

  1. When it comes to “reality” shows on HGTV, what do you see over and over that you know isn’t remotely real?

Schedule and budget.
