Kohler’s Artist Editions

Since 1981, Kohler has produced a stunning collection of Artist Edition sinks, purposeful works of art that merge function and creativity. The series began when Herb Kohler, chairman of the Kohler Company, was touring the company’s pottery facility in Wisconsin and spotted artists who were participating in the Arts/Industry residency program, a partnership with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. “The program allows artists to use our facilities and bring their art to life with plumbing materials,“ says Alyssa Wilterdink, product manager with Kohler. “Herb Kohler was captivated by the process, and invited the artists to create beautiful products for us.” The collaboration went so well that Kohler eventually moved the production in-house, with their own talented industrial designers and artisans regularly creating new sink series. “They get inspiration from fashion, arts, ceramics,” says Wilterdink. “And we do tons of research into regional trends and market needs.”

Artist Editions sinks, available in vessel, drop-in and under-mount styles, can take up to 18 months from concept to market. “If the Kohler family develops an affinity for a particular design they’ll keep it in the product line for at least a decade,” says Wilterdink. The newest series is Dutch Masters, a floral-focused line. “Our designers looked at florals in the homescape and created sinks that are classic but with a new perspective.” says Wilterdink, who adds that her personal favorite is the Derring line, which features glazes carefully crafted from a combination of mineral elements. “I absolutely adore them,” she says. “ They have the beautiful look of shifting colors that is prominent in ceramics.”

The Kohler process is noteworthy in its ability to commercially reproduce these distinctive sinks. “It is easy to make something beautiful and artistic once, but its much harder to make it manufacturable in industrial applications,” Wilterdink says. “All of our Artist Editions sinks go through the same rigorous testing as our other sinks. So you get a statement piece that looks like a piece of art with the same level of Kohler quality.”
