Upcoming Events for the Boston Design Community

Boston is home to an impressive array of educational institutions, including 35 colleges, universities and community colleges. For architects and designers—and any laymen interested in those disciplines—our city offers intriguing and informative lectures throughout the year. Here are some upcoming events that shed light on a variety of subjects in design, architecture and related fine arts:

From July 16-20, the annual Symposium of the IASS – International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures – will take place in Boston at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The symposium’s theme,  “Creativity in Structural Design,” will unite designers and researchers working in the fields of structural engineering and architecture to celebrate work that is pushing the boundaries of the built world by utilizing recent advances in computation, materials, and fabrication. architecture.mit.edu

Don’t miss the remaining Thursday Summer Visiting Artist Lecture Series at the Mass Art. Held at the Design and Media Center on Huntington Avenue, the afternoon sessions are free and open to the public. Upcoming artists include Jessica Tam and Matthew Hinçman. massart.edu

The Design Museum Foundation is a “nomadic” nonprofit whose mission is to bring the transformative power of design everywhere. Every month, they host Design Museum Mornings throughout Boston. On July 20, stop by 101 Seaport Boulevard for a coffee, muffin, and “Change: Empowering our Youth.” Sanjli Gidwaney, CEO of Design for Change USA, will share the power of design thinking as a lever for social change and its impact on the youngest members of our society. designmuseumfoundation.org

For a more intensive educational offering, architects and designers may be interested in the Boston Society of Architects’ Residential Design for Health and Longevity two-day course at Wasserstein Hall in Cambridge. Beginning on July 30, the program will present the latest international design research on aging in place and review some of the most forward-thinking projects. architects.org

Interior Designers are tasked with finding the perfect pieces for the most important moments in their clients’ home lives—and a dining table is no exception. Join Keith Fritz of Keith Fritz Fine Furniture on August 9 at the Boston Design Center as he discusses how to source the perfect table (bostondesign.com). Then stick around for the Boston Design Center’s Second Annual Summer Soiree on the Sixth Floor (bostondesign.com). This year’s theme is “Design Through the Decades” and each showroom will embrace trends of the past. There will be goodies for the first 200 guests plus a few highly desirable raffle prizes, such as Sonos speakers and wood shelves from Jewett Farms + Co. All proceeds from the event will benefit Zumix, a nonprofit that teaches youth to use music to make strong positive change in their lives, their communities, and the world. 7 Tide will be there, too! We’re sponsoring the photo booth for the evening, so come join in on the fun for a good cause. Also in August, the International Furnishings and Design Association of New England will assemble at 7 Tide on August 23 for a networking event. ifda.com
